Emergency Ride Home Program Guidelines

Emergency Ride Home (ERH) is a service provided by Central Indiana Commuter Services (CICS) for all active carpoolers, vanpoolers, walker, bikers, and transit riders.  Taxi service is provided for participants so they are not stranded at work or left without transportation when there is an emergency during the day.   The types of emergencies covered by ERH are personal illness, family member illness, personal or family emergency, unexpected overtime, carpool or vanpool driver has emergency, or mechanical problems with the carpool or vanpool vehicle. ERH cannot be used to get to work, weather related inconveniences, preplanned appointments, or personal errands. This service is free of charge for the commuter, but can only be used on days when the commuter used a commute option, other than driving alone, to get to work.

To qualify for ERH a commuter must meet the following requirements:

1) Be an active carpooler, vanpooler, walker, biker, or transit rider – register with CICS and participate at least three times a week.

2) Work anywhere in the nine county Central Indiana Region.

3) Work for an active employer – the employer must register with CICS and appoint an Employee Transportation Coordinator.

The ERH program will provide the following services:

  • Free taxi service from the work place to a single location, such as home or a hospital, in case of an emergency.  When multiple riders share a taxi, multiple stops are allowed.
  • Free taxi service is limited to 50 miles from the work site.  The commuter must cover the cost beyond 50 miles and any gratuities.
  • Each qualifying commuter is entitled to five vouchers for a 12 month period.  The 12 month period begins when the commuter registers at CICS or when their employer becomes active.
  • If multiple riders share a taxi, each rider must be listed on the voucher and one ride is deducted from their 12 month allocation.

Vouchers are provided at the work site by the Employee Transportation Coordinator (ETC) or through this website. Your registration confirmation letter will provide information on how to acces the vouchers and the service providers. The participant must send in one copy of the voucher to CICS within 48 hours of the time of service.
